Chinese Ambassador Cheng Jingye Presents Letter of Credence to the Australian Governor-General

On 22 June 2016, newly-appointed Chinese Ambassador Cheng Jingye presented his credential letters to His Excellency General the Honorable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, in a grand ceremony at the Government House in Canberra. After the ceremony, Ambassador Cheng and Governor-General Peter Cosgrove had a cordial meeting.

Ambassador Cheng conveyed greetings from President Xi Jinping to the Governor-General and gave high comments on China-Australia relations. He said that bilateral ties had made leap-frog development since the establishment of diplomatic relations. In recent years, the bilateral relationship was elevated to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, ChAFTA was signed and put into force, and substantial progress was made in various areas of exchanges and cooperation.

Ambassador Cheng said that he was happy to be able to serve as Chinese Ambassador to Australia at this important time and looked forward to working with all sectors of Australia to push for more progress of bilateral ties.

Governor-General Peter Cosgrove asked Ambassador Cheng to convey his sincere greetings to President Xi Jinping and welcomed him to serve as Chinese Ambassador to Australia. He said that President Xi's visit to Australia in 2014 was a historic one. The current bilateral ties are full of vitality with close exchanges and cooperation in all fields. The level of bilateral relations has been unprecedented. The Australian side is commited to building friendship and exchanges with China.

Ambassador Cheng arrived in Australia on 7 May and presented the copy of his credentials to Chief of Protocol of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on 10 May.
